Jamaica vs. Honduras
The final match of Group B sees Honduras play Jamaica at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. This is by far the most anticipated match of the group, that has the makings of either a shoot out or a cagey affair.
Honduras answered their opening 0-0 draw to Guatemala with an emphatic 7-1 dispatching of Grenada, star Forward Carlos Costly scoring a hat trick and Alfredo Mejía sealing it in injury time. This was the type of game that Los Catrachos needed in order to get their blood flowing and minds into this tournament, they have now shown they can be effective in defense and in attack but will need to put this all together against a Jamaican side that very well might be joining the likes of themselves, Mexico and USA as the class of CONCACAF soccer. Coach Luis Fernando Suárez will be looking to his rock solid defense to combat the speed that Jamaica possesses and hit them on the counter attack, as the one aspect that the Jamaican team lacks is a solid backline.
As for Jamaica, they have already qualified for the Quarterfinals due to their 2-0 win over Guatemala and are looking to finish this group undefeated. Aside from Mexico this has been the best team in the tournament both in terms of excitement and overall play, their speed and movement is second to none but when they add finishing ability to the chances they create it’s a beautiful sight. The player of the tournament behind Mexico’s Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has to be Dane Richards, even though he doesn’t have a goal his runs open up space for others and he’s played the role of “provider” with two quality assists. While assists are a questionable stat to keep where soccer is concerned not in this case, Dane Richards is the spark plug of The Reggae Boyz attack and Honduras would do themselves a favor if they found a way to handcuff the dominative Jamaican One possibility is to man mark him, giving one player the sole responsibility of tracking his every movement.. Another player of interest is Dermar Phillips, he leads the team in scoring with 3 goals and plays a very unique style, he acts as an extra forward at times and his stocky powerful frame allows him to shake off defenders with ease
Outside of the USA Vs. Canada this is the match that I’m most looking forward to, the contrast in styles alone is fascinating but adding in players like Dane Richards, Ryan Johnson, Dermar Phillips, Carlos Costly and Hendry Thomas makes it that much better. This is a tough call but I’m giving the slight edge to Honduras, they have proven to be a more rounded side while Jamaica at times has looked suspect at the back.
