Florida Marlins vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Two teams in second place in their respective divisions meet in game one of their weekend series as the Florida Marlins host the Milwaukee Brewers.  The Marlins are -125 favorites over the Brewers with an over/under run total set at 7.5 runs.

The Florida Marlins continue to fly under the radar and at the same time continue to lead in the National League Wildcard race. The Marlins are two games back in the NL East, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and 14-12 at home this season. As a team Florida is hitting .252 with Gaby Sanchez hitting .316, Logan Morrison hitting .317, and Mike Stanton hitting .267. As a team the Marlins pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.63 with the starters having an ERA of 3.91 and the bullpen at 3.10. For game one against the Brew Crew Florida starts Ricky Nolasco who took his first loss of the year in his last start. For the season Nolasco has allowed 80 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 59 in 73 innings of work on the mound.

The Milwaukee Brewers have been improving as the season goes on and they are sending a message to the rest of the league that they are going to be a contender this season. The Brewers are two and a half games back in the NL Central, 9-19 on the road this season, and 7-3 in their last 10 games. As a team Milwaukee is hitting .256 with Ryan Braun hitting .306 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI’s, Rickie Weeks hitting .291, and Prince Fielder hitting .291 with 11 homers and 42 RBI’s. The Brewers pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.70 with the starters at 3.92 and the bullpen at 3.25. For game one in South Florida Milwaukee starts Randy Wolf who has allowed just one run in each of his last two starts. For the season Wolf has allowed 63 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 48 in 65.1 innings of work on the mound.

Florida is 4-1 in their last five games following an off day, 19-8 in their last 27 home games against a left handed starter, and 2-5 in Nolasco’s last seven home starts. Milwaukee is 7-0 in their last seven games following a loss, 7-2 in their last nine games against a right handed starter, and 2-6 in Wolf’s last eight road starts. Milwaukee is 7-23 in their last 30 games at Florida.

While we have decent pitching here these are two opportunistic teams that should score some runs. I like the over 7.5 today.
