Chicago Cubs vs. Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs meet for game three of their series in Philadelphia. The Phillies are -200 favorites over the Chicago Cubs with an over/under run total set 7.5.
The Philadelphia Phillies haven’t been playing their best baseball of late but they continue to lead the NL East and helped their cause with a win on Friday. Dominic Brown and Placido Polanco homered with Polanco’s being a grand slam and Shane Victorino and Raul Ibanez each had two hits to lead the eight hit seven run Phillies offensive output. Roy Halladay allowed six hits without allowing a run while striking out nine over seven innings of work to earn his ninth win of the season and Antonio Bastardo picked up his second save of the year. For game three against the Cubs Philadelphia starts Cliff Lee who has won three of his last four starts. For the season Lee has allowed 89 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 100 in 87 innings of work on the mound.
The Chicago Cubs have proved to be a team not ready to compete each night as they lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games on Friday Night. Kosuke Fukudome and Starlin Castro each had two hits and Aramis Ramirez drove in two runs as part of a 10 hits five run effort that fell short in a late Cubs rally. Carlos Zambrano allowed seven hits and seven earned runs while striking out five over 6.1 innings of work to take his third loss of the season in one of his worst outings of the year. For Saturday’s rematch Chicago look to Matt Garza for the start as he still looks to get into gear as a member of the Cubs. For the season Garza has allowed 62 hits and 27 earned runs while striking out 71 in 59.2 innings of work.
Philadelphia is 11-4 in their last 15 home games against a team with a losing record, 3-5 in their last eight games against a right handed starter, and 8-2 in Lee’s last 10 home starts. Chicago is 19-8 in their last 27 games against the NL East, 2-7 in their last nine road games, and 1-4 in Garza’s last five road starts. Chicago is 4-2 in the last six meetings of these two.
The odds in this one are way out of hand but there really isn’t anywhere to go but the Phillies. The Phillies bats could struggle with Garza here so it’s tough to give the run line. I’m taking the Phillies minus the 200.
