The PGA Tour visits Aronimink Golf Club this week outside of Philadelphia for the AT&T National. This will be the final time the course hosts the event as it was on loan to them while Congressional prepared to host the U.S. Open. Congressional will return as the host course in 2012. Looking at the final standings from 2010, the course was certainly not easy test for players as only the top 16 finished under par for the week. Of those finishing in the top 10, eight of them averaged over 295 yards off the tee so it appears from the small sample size that longer hitters may enjoy an advantage at Aronimink. With that in mind, here is a look at players who fared well at the event last year (the only year Aronimink has hosted a PGA event) and who are also playing well coming into this week and, therefore, should be factors come Sunday in Pennsylvania. Some of the golfers I like to fare well this week are as follows:
Nick Watney +1400– I never look at the odds before I make my top 5 picks (I don’t want the books to influence my thought process) and this is a rare occasion where my top pick is also the odds-on favorite to win this week. He finished 7th at Aronimink in 2010 and comes in off of a nice showing at the Travelers last week.
Webb Simpson +2800– This is also Simpson’s second week in a row in my top 5 and he had another good performance at the Travelers last week… his third straight top 15. There is a PGA Tour victory in the near future for Simpson. He’s just too good not to win eventually. Proof? He’s ranked #1 in the all around category statistically on the PGA Tour so far in 2011.
Carl Pettersson+5000– Finished 6th at Aronimink in 2010 and is playing really well coming into this week with 8 consecutive rounds in the 60s. Could he make it two straight for the Swedes after Jacobson’s win last week?
