Washington Nationals vs. Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals meet in game one in one of the many local interleague battles this weekend.  The Nationals are -120 favorites over the Orioles with an over/under run total set at 8.5.

The Baltimore Orioles used almost every pitcher on the roster on Wednesday and then the New York Yankees shelled them on Thursday. The Orioles are in last place in the American League East, five games back in the standings having lost three in a row and going 10-13 overall at home this season. As a team Baltimore is hitting .246 led by Vladimir Guerrero at .303, Adam Jones at .292, and Matt Wieters at .273. As a team the Baltimore pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.25 with the starters at 3.86 and the bullpen at 4.93. For game one against the Nats Baltimore starts Jake Arrieta who has won his last four decisions. For the season Arrieta has allowed 42 hits and 23 earned runs while striking out 46 in 51.1 innings of work.

The Washington Nationals are in last place in the National League East but it is more a matter of being inconsistent as opposed to not having the talent to win. Washington is six games back in the NL East, 9-14 on the road this season, 4-6 in their last 10 games. Washington is the worst hitting team in baseball at .225 with team leader Jayson Werth hitting .234, Ian Desmond hitting .212, and Danny Espinosa hitting .194. As a staff the Nationals’ pitchers have a team ERA of 3.64 with the starters at 3.93 and the bullpen at 3.06. For game one at Camden yards Washington starts Jason Marquis who is having a solid year on the mound. For the season marquis has allowed 58 hits and 21 earned runs while striking out 31 in 53.1 innings of work.

Baltimore is 4-0 in their last four interleague games, 6-1 in their last seven against a team with a losing record, and 4-0 in Arrieta’s last four starts. Washington is 4-9 in their last 13 against the AL East, 2-6 in their last eight overall, and 6-1 in Marquis’ last seven starts. Washington is 1-5 in their last six games in Baltimore.

This is about as good of a pitching matchup as we get with these two so this is a solid chance to jump on the under.  Take the under 8.5 runs here.
