Texas Rangers vs. Philadelphia Phillies

The storyline is all Cliff Lee as he faces the team he led to the World Series a year ago when the Philadelphia Phillies host the Texas Rangers.  The Phillies are -165 favorites over the Rangers with an over/under total set at 7.5 runs.

The Philadelphia Phillies got in the first punch as they took game one in their series against the Texas Rangers on Friday. Ben Francisco and Raul Ibanez homered and Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz each had hits as the Phillies turned four hits into three runs, which was enough scoring to get the win. Roy Halladay allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven over eight innings to get his sixth win of the year and Ryan Madson pitched the ninth inning to get his eighth save of the year. For Saturday’s game it’s Cliff Lee taking the mound to face his ex-team, the team he didn’t resign with when he became a free agent following the Rangers’ loss in the World Series. Lee has lost his last three decisions as he has struggled at times and for the season he has allowed 60 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 68 in 58.2 innings of work.

The Texas Rangers have been bouncing in and out of first place in the American League West and losing on Friday didn’t do anything to help their cause. Andrian Beltre had two hits, Mitch Moreland drove in a run, and Elvis Andrus and Endy Chavez both scored but the seven hits and two runs the Rangers had as a team on Friday wasn’t enough to get the job done. C.J. Wilson allowed just four hits and three earned runs while striking out 10 over seven innings of work to take his third loss of the year. For game two in Philly Texas starts Colby Lewis who has won three of his last four starts. For the season Lewis has allowed 48 hits and 23 earned runs while striking out 38 over 54.1 innings of work.

Philadelphia is 6-1 in their last seven interleague games, 6-1 in their last seven home games against a team with a losing road record, and 8-2 in Lee’s last 10 starts against a team with a winning record. Texas is 4-1 against the National League East, 4-10 in their last 14 road games, and 1-4 in Lee’s last five starts.

While Philadelphia got the best of it in game one, this looks like a good spot for the Rangers to turn the tables and even the series at a nice price.  I’m taking the Rangers +145.
