San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers meet the San Francisco Giants for the eighth time this season on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.  The Dodgers are -135 favorites over the Giants with an over/under total set at 6.5 runs.

The Los Angeles Dodgers don’t seem to get any forward momentum going this season and are in third place in the National League West. The Dodgers trail the Rockies by three and a half games, are 5-5 in their last 10 games, and 11-12 at home this season. As a team Los Angeles is hitting .252 led by Andre Ethier at .333, Matt Kemp at .321, and Jamey Carroll at .311. The Dodgers pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.88 with the starters at 3.46 and the bullpen at 4.89. For game one against the defending champs Los Angeles starts Clayton Kershaw who has won his last three starts. For the season Kershaw has allowed 50 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 64 in 59 innings of work.

The San Francisco Giants lost the lead in the NL West by losing to the Rockies on Tuesday but they are just a half of a game back in the standings. The Giants have lost two games in arrow, are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and are 12-14 on the road this season. As a team San Francisco is hitting just .239 with Freddy Sanchez leading the regulars at .272, Buster Posey hitting .271, and Aaron Rowand hitting .250. The Giants pitching staff has been solid once again with a team ERA of 3.34 with the starters at 3.42 and the bullpen at 3.18. For game one of the quick two game series in LA San Francisco starts Matt Cain who has put up consistently good numbers all season. For the season Cain has allowed 46 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 38 in 50.1 innings of work.

Los Angeles is 2-5 in their last seven home games, 1-4 in their last five against the NL West, and 5-1 in Kershaw’s last six home starts. San Francisco is 4-1 in their last five games against a left handed starter, 12-4 in their last 16 against the NL West, and 7-2 in Cain’s last nine road starts. The Giants are 4-0 in Cain’s last four starts against the Dodgers while the Dodgers are 5-2 in Kershaw’s last seven starts against the Giants.

I’m not expecting a lot of offense against these arms and while the total looks low, it still goes under.  Take under 6.5 runs tonight.
