Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers meet for game three of their series at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.  The Pirates are -115 favorites over the Dodgers with an over/under total set at 7.5 runs.

After winning game one of the series, the Pirates dropped game two in a game that was scoreless through five innings. Andrew McCutchen had three hits and two home runs and Jose Tabata, Matt Diaz, Steve Pearce, and Ryan Doumit all had hits in the losing effort. Starter Kevin Correia allowed 10 hits and five runs, four of them earned while striking out two over 6.1 innings of work to take his third loss of the year. For game three of the series Pittsburgh starts Paul Maholm who has lost three of his four decisions this season. For the year Maholm has allowed 40 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 29 in 44 innings of work.

The Los Angeles Dodgers even their series in Pittsburgh as they head into game three on Wednesday. Matt Kemp homered and had two hits as Jamey Carroll and Aaron Miles had three hits and Andre Ethier and Rod Barajas had two hits each in a 15 hit 10 run offensive assault. Ted Lilly allowed four hits and two runs while striking out four to get his third win of the season. For Wednesday’s game Los Angeles starts Hiroki Kuroda who has lost three of his last four decisions. For the season Kuroda has allowed 48 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 33 in 46.1 innings of work.

Pittsburgh is 4-2 in their last six games overall, 4-2 in their last five against the NL West, and 1-7 in Maholm’s last eight starts against a team with a losing record. Los Angeles is 7-3 in their last 10 games against a left handed starter, 2-5 in their last seven games overall, and 1-4 in Kuroda’s last five starts. Los Angeles is 2-5 in their last seven games in Pittsburgh.

Neither of these pitchers has shown much thus far. Los Angles hasn’t been good but they own Maholm, we probably see plenty of runs here.  I’m taking the over 7.5 runs here.
