Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets

Two rivals collide in the National League East as the Philadelphia Phillies visit the New York Mets for game one of a three game series.  The Phillies are -150 favorites over the Mets with an over/under total set at 7 runs.

The New York Mets are making more news off the field these days and it may be a good thing to be keeping attention away from what has been taking place on the field. The Mets are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 10-12 at home this season, and in fourth place in the NL East trailing the Phillies by seven and a half games. As a team New York is hitting .246 led by Jose Reyes at .319, Ike Davis at .302, Carlos Beltran at .278, and Daniel Murphy at .261. The Mets pitching staff has an ERA of 4.18 with the starters at 4.44 and the bullpen at 3.68. For game one against the division leaders New York starts Chris Capuano who has lost four of his last five starts. For the season Capuano has allowed 59 hits and 29 earned runs while striking out 39 in 48.2 innings of work.

The Philadelphia Phillies are in first place in the National League East but at times they look like a team that is just getting warmed up. The Phillies have won two in a row, sox of their last 10, and they are 12-9 on the road this season as they have a one game lead in the division over the Florida Marlins who are also playing well. As a team Philadelphia is hitting just .246 led by Placido Polanco at .323, Shane Victorino at .284, Jimmy Rollins at .264 and Ryan Howard at .253 with 11 home runs. The Phillies’ pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.04 with the starters at 3.21 and the bullpen at 2.64. For game one in the Big Apple Philadelphia starts Roy Oswalt who has lost his last two decisions. For the season Oswalt as allowed 36 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out 27 in 39 innings of work.

New York is 5-2 in their last seven home games, 1-4 in their last five games overall, and 1-4 in Capuano’s last five starts. Philadelphia is 5-1 in their last six game one of a series, 13-3 in their last 16 road games against a left handed starter, and 1-4 in Oswalt’s last five starts. Philadelphia is 4-1 in their last five games in New York.

Look for both teams to have their bats come to life as there isn’t a lot of love between these two.  I’m taking the over 7 runs here.
