New York Mets vs. Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies and New York Mets meet for an afternoon game at Coors Field in Colorado.  The Rockies are -175 favorites over the Mets with an over/under run total set at 8.

The Colorado Rockies battled back on Tuesday night against the Mets but after the rain delay they wilted and dropped their seventh game in their last 10. Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez both homered and Todd Helton had two hits as the Rockies scored three runs off of six hits. Jason Hammel allowed four runs off of seven hits while striking out five over seven innings of work to take his second loss of the year. On Wednesday Colorado looks to stop the bleeding and hang onto their slim lead in the NL West as they send Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound. Jimenez has yet to win this season but he is coming off his best start of the year allowing just two hits and a run over six innings of work. For the season Jimenez has allowed 22 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 27 over 26 innings of work.

The New York Mets are a better team than they were last season but that isn’t saying a lot but at the very least they are competing. On Tuesday Daniel Murphy had two hits, Ike Davis drove in two runs, and Mike Pelfrey helped his own cause by driving in two runs. On the mound Pelfrey allowed six hits and three runs over 6.2 innings of work to get his third win of the season. On Wednesday afternoon New York looks to make it two wins in a row as they start Jon Niese. For the season Niese has allowed 45 hits and 22 earned runs while striking out 29 in 42 innings of work.

Colorado is 7-3 in their last 10 against a left handed starter, 1-5 in their last six games overall, and 0-8 in Jimenez’s last eight starts. New York is 5-2 in their last seven game three in a series, 7-16 in their last 23 games against a right handed starter, and 1-9 in Niese’s last 10 starts against a team with a winning record. New York is 1-5 in the last six meetings of these two.

While it’s tough to lay these kinds of odds with a pitcher like Jimenez who hasn’t won in quite some time and who is inconsistent on his best day these days.  Still, I will take the Rockies -175 in today’s game.
