Minnesota Twins vs. Seattle Mariners

The Minnesota Twins look to improve on their worst record in baseball as they host the Seattle Mariners.  The Mariners are -120 favorites over the Twins with an over/under run total set at 7.

It’s been a nightmare of a season for the Minnesota Twins as they have gone from American League Central Champions to the worst overall record in baseball in just over a quarter of a season. The Twins are 14 and a half games back in their division, 4-11 at home, and 3-7 in their last 10 games. As a team Minnesota is hitting .232 led by Jason Kubel at .318, Denard Span at .282, and Michael Cuddyer at .259. As a team the Twins pitching staff have an ERA of 4.95 with the starters at 4.75 and the bullpen at 5.34. For game one against the Mariners Minnesota starts Carl Pavano who has two no decisions preceded by two losses in his last four starts. For the season Pavano has allowed 63 hits and 32 earned runs while striking out 20 in 54.1 innings of work.

The Seattle Mariners are in third place in the American League West but that means that they are a game and a half out of first. The Mariners have won five games in arrow, six of their last 10, and they are 11-12 on the road this season. Seattle is the worst hitting team in the Majors at .227 topped by Iciro Suzuki at .288, Justin Smoak at .271, and Jack Cust at .224. As a team the Seattle pitching staff has an ERA of 3.40 with the starters at 3.10 and the bullpen at 4.18. For game one at Target Field Seattle starts Jason Vargas who has won his last three decisions. For the season Vargas has allowed 56 hits and 22 earned runs while striking out 41 in 58.1 innings of work.

Minnesota is 1-4 in their last five game one of a series, 0-7 in their last seven home games against a team with a losing record, and 3-9 on Pavano’s last 12 starts. Seattle is 8-2 in their last 10 game one of a series, 1-4 in their last five against the AL Central, and 4-13 in Vargas’ last 17 starts. Seattle is 2-6 in the last eight meetings of these two.

Seattle looks like they have figured some things out and seem to have the confidence the Twins are lacking.  I’m taking Seattle minus the 120 today.
