Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates look to continue their solid play as they host the Los Angeles Dodgers for game one of their series.  The Dodgers are -120 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under total set at 7.5 runs.

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to build up their team and they are already seeing results. The Pirates are at .500 overall, just two and half games out in the National League Central and though they have won six of their last 10 games, they are just 6-4 at home this season. As a team Pittsburgh is hitting .234 with Neil Walker hitting .295, Jose Tabata hitting .231, and Lyle Overbay hitting .228. As a team the Pirates pitching staff has an ERA of 3.69 with the starters at 4.19 and the bullpen at just 2.72. For game one against LA Pittsburgh starts Jeff Karstens who hasn’t been winning but his outings have been improving. Overall Karstens has allowed 30 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out 22 in 26.2 innings of work.

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue their road trip and they start the week in fourth place in the NL West, four games out of first. The Dodgers are 7-10 on the road this season and 4-6 in their last 10 games overall. As a team Los Angeles is hitting .255 with Andre Ethier hitting .371, Matt Kemp hitting .338, and Jamey Carroll hitting .311. The Dodgers pitching staff has an ERA of 4.37 with the starters at 3.96 and the bullpen at 5.28. For game one in the Steel City Los Angeles starts Chad Billingsley who has had no decisions in four of his last five starts. For the season Billingsley has allowed 37 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 38 in 41.1 innings of work.

Pittsburgh is 4-0 in their last four Monday games, 3-7 in their last 10 home games against a right handed starter, and 1-5 in Karstens’ last six home starts. Los Angeles is 4-1 in their last five Monday games, 2-4 in their last six road games, and 2-9 in Billingsley’s last 11 road starts. Los Angeles is 1-4 in their last five meetings in Pittsburgh.

There is some value here with the home underdog and with the Dodgers play at PNC Ballpark in recent meetings; it’s worth taking a shot on the value with the Pirates at +110.
