Kansas City Royals vs. New York Yankees

The New York Yankees and the Kansas City Royals meet for game one of their series in the Bronx.  The Yankees are -230 favorites over the Royals with an over/under run total set at 9.5.

The New York Yankees are getting older but in the standings they are in the same spot we have grown familiar with, first place. The Yankees are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 12-6 at home, and have outscored their opponents by 38 runs. As a team New York is hitting .252 with Robinson Cano at .290, Curtis Granderson is hitting .283, Derek Jeter is hitting .276, and Alex Rodriguez is hitting .263. The Yankees pitching staff has an ERA of 3.70 with the starters at 3.94 and the bullpen at 3.22. For game one of the series against KC New York starts Freddy Garcia who hasn’t won since his first start of the year. For the season Garcia has allowed 22 hits and eight earned runs while striking out 23 in 25 innings of work.

The Kansas City Royals are one of only two teams in the AL Central with a winning record as they chase the Cleveland Indians. The Royals are just 3-8 on the road but they are 6-4 in their last 10 games overall and have outscored their opponents by 13 runs. As a team Kansas City is hitting .267 with Alex Gordon hitting .309, Wilson Betemit at .309, and Jeff Francoeur hitting .302. As a staff Royals’ pitchers have an ERA of 4.23 with the starters at 4.75 and the bullpen at 3.28. For game one at Yankee Stadium Kansas City starts Kyle Davies who has lost his last three starts. For the season Davies has allowed 50 hits and 29 earned runs while striking out 26 in 35.3 innings of work.

New York is 5-1 in their last six games following an off day, 4-1 in their last five games against a team with a winning record, and 57-25 in their last 82 games against the AL Central. Kansas City is 5-2 in their last seven games against a right handed starter, 17-41 in their last 58 road games, and 0-4 in Davies last four starts. Kansas City is 6-28 in the last 34 meetings in New York.

With this pitching match up it’s going to be a slugfest and I’m looking for a lot of runs from both sides.  I’m taking the over 9.5 runs.

Over 9.5
