Florida Marlins vs. St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Florida Marlins meet in game two of their series in St. Louis.  The Cardinals are -140 favorites over the Marlins with an over/under run total set at 8.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in first place in the National League Central but their lead got a little slimmer on Monday as they fell in game on of their series with Florida. Ryan Theriot had three hits, Lance Berkman had two hits including a home run and four RBI’s on the day the Cardinals put David Freese on the DL. Kyle Lohse allowed six hits and five earned runs while striking out just two in six innings of work to not figure in the decision as Mitchell Boggs allowed two hits and a run in one inning of work to take his second loss of the season. St. Louis looks to rebound on Tuesday as they send Kyle McClellan to the mound for the start. For the season McClellan has allowed 34 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out 17 in 30.2 innings of work.

The Florida Marlins are tied for first place in the National League East and are playing some of the best baseball of anyone. On Monday Gaby Sanchez had two hits including a grand slam, Mike Stanton had three hits including a home run, and Emilio Bonfico added two hits in the win. Starter Chris Volstad allowed seven hits and five runs in five innings of work to not factor in the decision as Eduardo Mojica pitched two scoreless and hitless innings getting his third win and Leo Nunez picked up his 10th save of the season. For Tuesday’s rematch Florida goes with Anibal Sanchez who flirted with his second career no hitter two starts ago. For the season Sanchez has allowed 31 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 30 in 30.1 innings of work.

St. Louis is 4-2 in their last six games overall, 6-3 in their last nine as a favorite, and 4-0 in McClellan’s last four starts. Florida is 6-1 in their last seven games as a road underdog, 6-2 in their last eight road games, and 0-4 in Sanchez’s last four road starts. Florida is 6-2 in the last eight meetings of these two.

This should be another good one and it should also be a real chess match, which means limited scoring.  I’ll take the under 8 runs.
