Florida Marlins vs. Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds and the Florida Marlins meet for game three of their series in Cincinnati. The Reds are a -130 favorite over the Marlins with an over/under run total set at 8.5 runs.
It took the Cincinnati Reds and extra inning but they made it work for them as they got the series evening win on Saturday. Edgar Renteria had the big RBI pinch hit in the bottom of the 10th while Brandon Phillips, Miguel Cairo, Ramon Hernadez, and Paul Janish all had two hits. Starter Edinson Volquez didn’t figure in the decision as he allowed two hits and a run while striking out five in five innings of work and it was Francisco Cordero who got the win after pitching the ninth and 10th inning. For Sunday’s finale Cincinnati starts Bronson Arroyo who won in his last start. For the season Arroyo has allowed 34 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out 27 in 29.2 innings of work.
The Florida Marlins led by three runs late on Saturday but they couldn’t hold on. Omar Infante had two hits, Wes Helms drove in two runs and Chris Coghlan and Gaby Sanchez both scored to provide the Marlins offense. Josh Johnson started and allowed just five hits and no runs while striking out six in seven innings of work to not figure in the decision. Mike Dunn was the eventual loser but it was Edward Mujica who allowed four hits and three runs causing the game to be extended. For Sunday’s game Florida starts Ricky Nolasco who hasn’t taken a loss this year. For the season Nolasco has allowed 32 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out 22 in 33.1 innings of work.
Cincinnati is 2-5 in their last seven home games, 1-4 in their last five against the NL East, and 1-4 in Arroyo’s last five starts against a team with a winning record. Florida is 8-3 in their last 11 games overall, 4-2 in their last six road games, and 4-1 in Nolasco’s last five starts in game three of a series.
The Reds got off the hook on Saturday but I’m not sure they are as fortunate on Sunday. I like Nolasco and the Marlins at +110.
