Detroit Red Wings vs. San Jose Sharks
The Detroit Red Wings look to look continue their quest at making history as they have rifled off 2 straight wins with their backs against the wall and can force a deciding Game 7 in San Jose with a victory on home ice tonight. The Red Wings are -140 favorites over the Sharks with an over/under goal total of 5.5.
After dominating the first 3 games of this series the Sharks have allowed the Wings to claw their way back into the series and they will have all the momentum on home ice in another lose or go home situation for the red and white. The Sharks will look to do what the Canucks did last night and close out the series in six games on the road against a desperate opponent who leave everything out on the ice.
Despite winning the first 3 games of this series the Red Wings pushed the Sharks to the brink in each one of them as all games were competitive and could have gone either way. Similarly, the Sharks had a number of chances to close out the Wings in the last two games but a bounce here and a break there gave the Wings each of the last two games and they will be pushing for a 3rd straight tonight. The Sharks have been brilliant offensively in this series thus far and must shift their attention to their defensive style that enabled them to have so much success in the early going of this series. The Wings have an equal if not greater roster in the offensive end than the Sharks and if San Jose is going to get into a run and gun game with the Wings and put their defensive responsibilities on the back burner they could be in trouble as Detroit is not a team you want to get into a shootout with. Antii Niemi needs a better game tonight as the final two Red Wings goals were quite soft and if he was on his game the Sharks would have ended this series and not have had to travel back to Detroit for this one tonight.
Detroit has taken the first steps to making history with the most difficult two left to come as they look to become to the 4th team in NHL history to bounce back from a 3-0 series deficit and win in a sudden death Game 7 back in San Jose. The Red Wings offense has finally shown up and Jimmy Howard has done enough to give the Red Wings back to back victories including a 3rd period comeback on the road in Game 5 to force a Game 6 back at the Joe. The Wings are 1-1 at home so far in this series and after the Sharks went up 2-0 they were incredibly satisfied with a split in Detroit as they set up a perfect scenario to knock off the Wings at home. However, Detroit spoiled the party and now they have all the momentum and are playing in front of one of the most raucous crowds in the NHL who will do everything they can to play a factor in this game.
San Jose has lacked that killer instinct that many championship teams possess as they have lost back to back elimination games and have dropped to 1-3 in that circumstance with a possible tailspin continuing tonight. San Jose is getting ridiculous value in this game as the Red Wings are pretty heavy home favorites and for good cause. However, it is tough to say what Detroit team is going to show up in this one but either way I think the best play in the game is on the total. If the Wings are going to win they need to continue to get pucks on Antii Niemi and the Sharks will have to counter the highflying attack somehow. I think this one goes over the total of 5.5 goals
