Chicago Cubs vs. New York Mets

The Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets meet in a battle of big market, big budget teams who have underperformed.  The Cubs are -120 favorites over the Mets with an over/under run total set at 8.5.

The Chicago Cubs are in fifth place in the National League Central and while they aren’t totally out of it, there are a lot of teams between them and first place. The Cubs are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 9-13 at home, and six and a half games back in the division race. As a team Chicago is the second best hitting team in baseball with a .276 average led by Starlin Castro at .323, Darwin Barney at .315, Marlon Byrd at .308, and Aramis Ramirez at .296. As a team the Cubs pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.69 with the starters at 5.54 and the bullpen at 3.27. For game one against the Mets Chicago starts Ryan Dempster who won his last decision but is looking like his best days are behind him. For the season Dempster has allowed 67 hits and 43 earned runs while striking out 35 in 54innings of work.

The New York Mets are in fourth place in the National League East and have been one of the streakier teams this season. The Mets are 12-12 on the road this season, 6-4 in their last 10 games, and they trail the Phillies by six games in the division. As a team New York is hitting .243 led by Jose Reyes at .310, Ike Davis at .302, and Carlos Beltran at .280. The Mets pitching staff has an ERA of 4.01 with the starters at 4.47 and the bullpen at 3.13. For game one at Wrigley Field New York starts Jon Niese who has won his last two starts. For the season Niese has allowed 58 hits and 27 earned runs while striking out 39 in 55.1 innings of work.

Chicago is 3-8 in their last 11 home games, 16-5 in their last 21 games against the NL East, and 2-7 in Dempster’s last nine home starts. New York is 4-1 in their last five games against a team with a losing record, 5-2 in their last seven road games against a right handed starter, and 4-1 in Niese’s last five starts. New York is 2-6 in their last eight games in Chicago.

Neither of these teams has shown much but the Mets have shown at least a little more, enough to give them the nod in this one.  Take the Mets plus 110 today.
