Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds

The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds play the rubber match of their weekend series at Wrigley Field.  The Cubs are -120 favorites over the Reds with an over/under total of 9 runs.

The Chicago Cubs battled back in the ninth inning to snag the win and even their series with the Cincinnati Reds at a game each. Kosuke Fukudome had three hits and an RBI, Carlos Pena had three hits including a ninth inning home run, and Blake DeWitt had two hits and scored twice. Casey Coleman pitched well allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six over six innings of work to not factor in the decision and Marcos Mateo didn’t allow a base runner in 1.1 innings of work to earn his first win of the year. For Sunday’s finale the Cubs start Ryan Dempster who hasn’t won in nearly a month.  For the season Dempster has allowed 48 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 34 in 38 innings of work.

The Cincinnati Reds let one get away and with the NL Central looking like a tight race, every game is going to count. Ryan Hanigan had two hits, Chris Heisey scored a run, and Fred Lewis drove in a run and scored in the losing effort. Bronson Arroyo allowed seven hits and a run not factoring in the decision as Francisco Cordero blew the save and took the loss allowing four hits and two runs in two-thirds of an inning of work. For Sunday’s finale Cincinnati starts Johnny Cueto for the first time this season. Reports from Cueto’s starts in the Minors he is ready to go.

Chicago is 3-7 in their last 10 against a right handed starter, 6-17 in their last 23 home games against a team with a winning record, and 1-6 in Dempster’s last seven home starts. Cincinnati is 4-2 in their last six against the NL Central, 7-16 in their last 23 road games against a right handed starter, and 0-6 in Cueto’s last six starts. Cincinnati is 5-1 in their last six games in Chicago.

The Cubs should have enough to win this contest at home.  I feel confident enough to take them minus the 120.
