Tampa Bay Rays vs. Los Angeles Angels
The Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels meet for game two of their series in Tampa Bay. The Rays are -150 favorites over the Angels with an over/under run total of 8.
The Tampa Bay Rays have been red hot since their slow start but they were cooled down just a bit as they fell to the Angels on Friday. Matt Joyce and B.J. Upton homered and Casey Kotchman and John Jason had two hits each but the Rays simply couldn’t keep pace. David Price had 12 hits and five earned runs while striking out four but he took his third loss of the year. For Saturday’s game Tampa Bay looks to bounce back as they send James Shields to the mound for the start. Shields has been improving this year and for the season he has allowed 29 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 27 in 38.1 innings of work.
The Los Angeles Angels took out the big sticks on Friday as they put on a hitting lesson. Mark Trumbo homered and Bobby Abreu, Howie Kendrick, and Alberto Callespo all had three hits and Torii Hunter, Erick Aybar, and Trumbo had two hits in a 17 hit offensive assault. Ervin Santana allowed four hits and four runs while striking out five in six innings of work to get his first win of the year. For Saturday’s rematch Los Angeles starts Joel Pinero who makes his first start of the year. Last season Pinero was 10-7 with a 3.84 ERA striking out 92 and allowing 155 hits in 152.1 innings of work.
Tampa Bay is 13-4 in their last 17 games, 6-3 in their last nine home games, and 4-0 in Shields’ last four starts. Los Angeles is 8-1 in their last nine road games, 3-5 in their last eight games overall, and 9-3 in Pinero’s last 12 starts. Los Angeles is 4-1 in their last five games in Tampa Bay.
We should see plenty of more hitting in this one and while both of these pitchers can bring it, we’re talking about some hot bats. I’ll take the over 8 runs in this one.
