Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are -155 favorites over the Tampa Bay this evening. The over/under run total is set at 9. Both Tampa Bay and Boston had hopes of winning the AL East this season, but currently they find themselves at the bottom of the division. Both squads will try to shake off the slow start as Jeremy Hellickson faces Daisuke Matsuzaka in Boston.
Jeremy Hellickson may have just been a rookie last season, but he surely didn’t disappoint in his limited appearances going 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA. He picked up his first career loss last week giving up three runs in five and two thirds against the Angels, but was extremely dominant striking out ten batters. The Rays offense has been absolutely pathetic this season, scoring over three runs just once in nine games and scoring only one run six times. Things might not get easier for Tampa Bay either with Manny Ramirez choosing early retirement rather than serve his 100 game suspension for suspected banned substance abuse. After over one week of play not one Rays hitter is batting over .300, with BJ Upton leading the way at an uninspiring .290.
After a fairly mediocre 2010 from Daisuke Matsuzaka, he started the 2011 season basically the same way giving up three runs over five innings as he picked up the loss. It was the same old story for Dice-K, who couldnt keep his pitch count down giving up six hits and walking three batters. It has not been the start Boston expected given how strong they looked in preseason, and despite being the World Series favorites would now create history if they did so after starting the year 0-6. Carl Crawford has had basically the worst possible start imagine, batting .132 with a lone RBI and is yet to have an extra base hit.
While the Rays struggles are ones that I expected given all the major offseason losses, I did not see this coming on Boston’s end. This team is too talented to be in the cellar for much longer, and I expect this team to put things together much sooner than later. They already looked like a much different team over the weekend, so plan on this team continuing to play well here at home. Ill lay the -155 and take the Red Sox tonight.
