Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers
After dropping game one of their series with the Seattle Mariners, the Detroit Tigers look to bounce back in game two. The Tigers are -215 favorites over the Mariners with an over/under total set at 7.5 runs.
The Detroit Tigers battled it out with Seattle for four innings but once Seattle got far ahead, the Tigers simply had no answers. Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Brennan Boesch, Jhonny Peralta and Brandon Inge all had hits but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep pace with Seattle on Tuesday.Phil Coke was crushed as he allowed eight hits nad seven earned runs while striking out four in 4.1 innings of work to take the loss. Detroit looks to rebound as they send Justin Verlander to the mound for the start. Verlander is known for being a slow starter and this season he has allowed 25 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 35 in 36 innings of work.
The Seattle Mariners are a mess once again this season but they rallied big on Tuesday and walked away with a win. Miguel Olivo and Justin Smoak homered and Jack Wilson and Olivo both had two hits on the night. Felix Hernandez earned his third win as he allowed four hits and three runs while striking four over six innings of work. Seattle hopes for another solid performance on the mound on Wednesday as they start Erik Bedard. For the season Beard has allowed 26 hits and 16 earned runs while striking out 17 in 18.2 innings of work.
Detroit is 4-1 in their last five games overall, 21-9 in their last 30 home games, and 1-5 in Verlander’s last six starts against the AL West. Seattle is 21-43 in their last 64 games, 8-20 in their last 28 against a right-handed starter, and 0-5 in Bedard’s last five starts. Seattle is 6-11 in their last 17 games in Detroit.
Seattle took out the bats on Tuesday and I see plenty more runs here for both teams. Over the 7.5 runs is the play in this ballgame.
