Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet for game two of their series at Coors Field in Colorado.  The Rockies are -185 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under total set at 9 runs.

The Colorado Rockies were shout out for the first time this season as they fell to the Pirates on Friday. Carlos Gonzalez, Seth Smith, Jose Lopez, Chris Ianetta, and Alfredo Amezaga all had hits but the Rockies couldn’t do enough to get a run across the plate. Jhoulys Chacin allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out eight in seven innings of work to take his second loss of the season. For Saturday’s game Colorado looks to bounce back as they send Jason Hammel to the hill for the start. For the season Hammel has allowed 26 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 14 in 23.2 innings of work.

The Pittsburgh Pirates might not be in the World Series this season but they are clearly a team loaded for the future. On Friday Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones homered and Roger Cedeno had an RBI and Pedro Alvarez scored a run to provide the Pirates offense. Kevin Correia allowed three hits in 6.2 scoreless innings to get his fourth win of the year and Joel Hanrahan got his eighth save of the year. For game game two in Colorado Pittsburgh starts Paul Maholm who won for the first time this season in his last start. For the year Maholm has allowed 28 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 22 in 30 innings of work.

Colorado is 5-1 in their last six games against a left handed starter, 16-7 in their last 23 overall, and 9-4 in Hammel’s last 13 starts. Pittsburgh is 1-4 in their last five game two of a series, 21-41 against the NL West, and 1-11 in Maholm’s last 12 road starts. Pittsburgh is 4-10 in their last 14 games in Colorado.

Pittsburgh got the best of Colorado Friday but the Rockies will turn the tables here.   I’ll lay the 185 and take the Rockies in this spot.
