New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals look to avoid being swept as they take on the New York Mets on Thursday.  The Nationals are -135 favorites over the Mets with the over/under run total set at 8 runs.

The Washington Nationals looked like winners on Wednesday but it all went down the drain in the ninth inning as they fell once again to the Mets. Jayson Werth and Roger Bernadina each had two hits, as Washington was only able to plate three runs off of 10 hits. Tom Gorzelanny allowed five hits and a run over 6.1 innings of work and Sean Burnett allowed four hits and four runs to blow the save and take the loss as he pitched just two-thirds of an inning. For Thursday’s game Washington starts the ageless Livan Hernandez who has pitched well for the most part this season. Thus far this year Hernandez has allowed 32 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out 15 in 31 innings of work.

As bad as the Mets have played at times this season, they are playing equally as well right now as they have won six games in a row and seven of their last 10. On Wednesday the Mets rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning as David Murphy homered in the eighth and had two hits and three RBI’s and Jason Bay and Ike Davis each added two hits contributing to the win. R. A. Dickey allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out three but it was Pedro Beato who got his first win and Francisco Rodriguez picking up his sixth save. On Thursday New York starts Chris Capuano who was a winner in his last outing. For the season Capuano has allowed 24 hits and 13 runs while striking out 17 in 19.2 innings of work.

Washington is 2-7 in their last nine games as a home favorite, 1-7 in their last eight games overall, and 1-5 in Hernandez’s last six starts against a team with a losing record. New York is 5-0 in their last five games following a win, 4-1 in their last five games against a right-handed starter, and 4-0 after scoring four or more runs their previous game. New York is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings of these two.

I see both teams getting plenty of hits here and this one should have no problem hitting the over.  Take the over 8 runs in today’s ballgame.
