Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Indians

First place meets last place as the Minnesota Twins host the Cleveland Indians in AL Central baseball action. The last-place Twins are -120 favorites over the first-place Indians.  The over/under total is set at 8 runs.

The Minnesota Twins have to be happy to be home as one of baseball’s best home teams over the past few years have gone 5-9 on the road this year and are in last place in the American League Central. The Twins have gone 4-6 in their last 10 games and have been outscored 57-89 overall. As a team Minnesota is hitting .231 with Jason Kubel hitting .319, Denard Span hitting .312, and Michael Cuddyer hitting .258 as a staff Twins pitchers have an ERA of 4.76 with the starters at 5.00 and the bullpen at 4.22. For game one against the Tribe Minnesota starts Brian Duensing. For the season Duensing has allowed 21 hits and eight earned runs while striking out 14 in 20 innings of work.

The Cleveland Indians dropped a tough one on Thursday but nonetheless; they are a game ahead of the Royals in the American League Central. Cleveland has gone 6-4 in their last 10, 6-4 on the road, and has outscored their opponents 99-66. Offensively the Indians are hitting .270 with Travis Hafner hitting .344, Michael Brantley at .313, and Asdrubal Cabrera hitting .269. As a staff Cleveland has an ERA of 3.35 with the starters at 3.57 and the bullpen at 2.86. For game one at Target Field the Indians stat Fausto Carmona whose numbers are still hurting from getting rocked opening day. For the season Carmona has allowed 22 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 20 in 24.2 innings of work.

Minnesota is 64-30 against the AL Central, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 11-1 in Duensing’s last 12 home starts. Cleveland is 5-0 in their last five game ones of a series, 20-8 in their last 28 overall, and 1-4 in Carmona’s last five road starts. Cleveland is 7-19 in their last 26 starts in Minnesota.

Carmona’s numbers are inflated by one bad game, common for early in the year and Duensing has pitched well. I can see this one staying low scoring.  My wager for this game will be under 8 runs.
