Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers are -125 favorites over the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The over/under run total is set at 8.5 runs. After being rained out on Tuesday and getting in a game on Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers meet again on Thursday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates just couldn’t get the bats going on Wednesday as the fell below .500 in the win-loss columns. Matt Diaz had two hits, Pedro Alvarez had a hit, and Lyle Overbay had a hit but that was all the offense the Pirates managed to get as they failed to have a runner cross the plate. Kevin Correia allowed five hits and six runs while striking out just one batter in six innings of work to take his first loss of the season. For Thursday’s rematch Pittsburgh starts Paul Maholm. Maholm has allowed 13 hits and five runs while striking out four in 12.1 innings of work.

The Milwaukee Brewers took over second place in the NL Central and edged closer to the Cincinnati Reds on top of the division. Prince Fielder homered and had three RBI’s and Chris Gomez, Yuneisky Bettancourt, and Jonathan Lucroy all had hits in the winning effort. Shaun Marcum allowed just four hits and struck out four over seven innings shutout innings of work to get his second win of the season. For Thursday’s game Milwaukee starts Chris Narveson who hasn’t allowed a run in his two starts this season. Thus far Narveson has allowed nine hits and four walks while striking out 14 in 13 scoreless innings to start the year.

Pittsburgh is 3-7 in their last 10 against a left handed starter, 5-1 in their last six games as a home underdog, and 3-9 in Maholm’s last 12 starts. Milwaukee is 6-1 in their last seven games overall, 3-6 in their last nine against the NL Central, and 0-4 in Narveson’s last four starts in game three of a series. Milwaukee is 41-13 in the last 44 meetings of these two.

While Pittsburgh may not be a contender, they are a lot better than a team whose bats will stay too quiet for long. This looks like a close low scoring game so the advantage as well as the value is with the home team, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
