Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs
The top seeded San Antonio Spurs open their title charge with a visit from the Memphis Grizzlies. The Spurs are 6-point favorites over the Memphis Grizzlies this afternoon with an over/under total set at 195.
After getting swept by the Phoenix Suns in last season’s playoffs, it looked like the Spurs era had come to an end. Fast forward a season and the Spurs find themselves the number one team in the West, thanks to a 61-21 regular season. The Spurs raced out of the gate to a 28-4 to start the season and never looked back, eventually finishing four games clear of the second place Los Angeles Lakers.
The Grizzlies on the other hand got their season off to slow start, however a 32-16 run to end the season would ensure they secured their first playoff berth in over four seasons. Despite the injury to Rudy Gay, the Grizzlies relied on their tough nose defense all season, a defense that forced more turnovers than anyone in the league.
The Spurs and Grizzlies split the regular season series 2-2, with each team winning on their home court. The Spurs won the first two meetings of the season in San Antonio. However, the Grizzlies would respond by winning the last to contests in Memphis.
The Spurs are 12-5 against the spread in their last 17 games as a favorite of 5-10 points, but just 4-10 against the spread in their last 14 home games. The Grizzlies on the other hand are 17-4 against the spread in their last 21 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 21-7 against the spread in their last 28 games as a road underdog.
Head to head, the Grizzlies are 5-0 against the spread in the last five meetings and 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings in San Antonio. The over is 4-1 in the last five meetings and 6-1 in the last seven in San Antonio.
As good as the Spurs have been this season, the Grizzlies are no slouches themselves and given their play in the second of the season, this promises to be one of the tougher 1-8 match up’s in the last couple of year’s. Even without Manu Ginobili, the Spurs have enough to cover him for game one and I expect them to get the win and the cover
