Chicago Cubs vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

The Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet for game one of their series in Arizona.  The Diamondbacks are -120 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 9.5 runs.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are three games below .500 and six games out of first in the National League West but they already look markedly improved over last season’s team. The Diamondbacks have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games, are 6-6 at home this year, and have been outscored by their opponents 111-128. As a team Arizona is hitting .254 With Stephen Drew at .319, Miguel Montero at .288, and Justin Upton at .270. The D-Backs pitching staff has an ERA of 4.92 with the starters at 5.55 and the bullpen at 4.12. For game one against the Cubs Arizona starts Barry Enright who has been consistent if nothing else this year. For the season Enright has allowed 32 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 14 over 23 innings of work.

The Chicago Cubs were rained out on Wednesday but it could have been a much-needed break as they had hit the skids losing three in a row and six of their last 10. The Cubs are tied for fourth place in the NL Central but just two games off the lead but their opponents 95-121 have outscored them. As a team Chicago is hitting .280 with Starlin Castro hitting .350, Darwin Barney hitting .329, and Aramis Ramirez hitting .325. The Cubbies pitching staff has an ERA of 4.92 with the starters at 5.91 and the bullpen at 3.32. For game one in Arizona Chicago starts Ryan Dempster who has had no decisions in his last two starts. For the season Dempster has allowed 38 hits and 26 earned runs while striking out 29 in 30.2 innings of work.

Arizona is 2-6 in their last eight games overall, 0-5 in their last five home games against a team with a losing road record, and 1-8 in Enright’s last nine starts. Chicago is 23-10 in their last 33 road games, 1-5 in their last six against the NL West, and 7-2 in Dempster’s last nine road starts. Chicago has won four of their last five in Arizona.

While the Cubs are virtually unbettable, Arizona is no bargain either and in game that is a coin flip I give a slight edge to the home team.  I’ll be taking the Diamondbacks -120 here.
