Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. St. Marys Gaels
For the third straight year the Gonzaga Bulldogs play the St. Marys Gaels in the West Coast Conference Championship in Las Vegas. Gonzaga is a 1-point favorite in the game this evening being played on a neutral floor. The over/under total is set at 139.
Gonzaga slipped past San Francisco in Sunday’s semifinal, 71-67, to earn an eighth-straight win but never came close to covering the 13-point spread as the favorite. San Francisco never was able to make up for the 12-0 run the Bulldogs made about midway through the first half. Despite an off night scoring and shooting, Gonzaga was excellent at the free-throw line and limited their mistakes to eight turnovers while San Francisco committed 16.
St. Marys was held below their season average in a 73-64 win over Santa Clara in their semifinals matchup. Still, St. Mary’s shot well overall from the field as well as the foul line in taking down a tough and determined Santa Clara squad. The final score ‘pushed’ the nine-point line the Gaels carried on Sunday. St. Mary’s had been idle since beating Portland at home to end the regular season, 83-69. The victory stopped a late three-game slide both overall and against the spread for the Gaels who closed the regular season dropping seven of their last nine against the spread. One of the losses was an 89-85 overtime defeat at home to Gonzaga as 4-point favorites. St. Marys had a five game er streak broken against Santa Clara. Eight of St. Marys last 10 games have gone er.
St. Marys beat Gonzaga last year in the conference final 81-62. Gonzaga was 5-point favorites in the game despite being blownout. St. Mary’s enjoyed a fine performance from Mickey McConnell who scored 26 and paced the Gaels with four of there 10 three-pointers. I expect todays game to be much different from that game. I think Gonzaga will get its revenge and beat St. Marys. Although, they played a little tight last night down the stretch against San Francisco, Gonzagas depth proved to be too much. Gonzagas depth will wear down St. Marys today and they should eek out a small victory that will take them to the NCAA Tournament.
