Dallas Mavericks vs. Portland Trail Blazers

The Dallas Mavericks are 2-point road favorites over the Portland Trail Blazers this evening.  The over/under total for the game is 189. These two teams would meet in the first round of the playoffs if the regular season ended today as Dallas is the 2nd seed in the west and Portland is the 7th seed.

The Dallas Mavericks are 47-19 overall and 37-29 against the spread. Dallas is searching for some consistency after alternating wins and losses its last six games.  The Mavericks continued that trend with Saturdays loss to the Los Angeles Lakers as a one-point home underdog, 96-91.  The combined 187 points failed to topple the 194-point closing total. Small forward Shawn Marion accounted for 25 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, while power forward Dirk Nowitzki had 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.  Shooting guard Jason Terry was the only other player to reach double digits in scoring with 13 points.  Dallas is now just 1-5 against the spread its past six games. Dallas forward Peja Stojakovic is ubtful for tonights game due to a back injury. The Mavericks conclude a brief two-day, two-game West Coast road trip with Wednesdays game at Golden State.

The Portland Trail Blazers is 37-29 overall and 35-31 against the spread.  Portland enters the game in a two game losing streak. The Trail Blazers fell to Atlanta Saturday as one-point road underdogs 91-82, while the combined 173 points went der the 181-point closing total.  The er had won the previous two games. Against Atlanta, power forward LaMarcus Aldridge posted 22 points, six rebounds and seven assists in the loss, while guard Wesley Matthews had 19 points.  Guard Brandon Roy provided 16 points, while forward Gerald Wallace had 5 points and 12 rebounds.

Dallas has won both home matchups this season with Portland, while splitting against the spread. The Mavericks prevailed December 15th as a 6 -point home favorite, 103-98, and January 4th as 2-point home favorites, 84-81.  I believe that Dallas will once again beat Portland and cover the spread.  The game should be tight throughout but Dallas will pull away in the 4th quarter led by Jason Kidds stellar play this year.  Take the Mavericks minus the two points.
