Syracuse Orange vs. Villanova Wildcats
The Villanova Wildcats are 3-point home favorites this evening against the Syracuse Orange in Big East action. The over/under for the game is set at 135. This will be a great preview of what to expect when March Madness rolls around in just a few weeks.
Villanova is 21-6 overall and 12-12 against the spread. They barely survived against DePaul on Saturday beating them 77-75 in overtime. Villanova was 12-point road favorites but the Wildcats needed a three-pointer from Corey Fisher in the waning seconds of regulation to tie the contest and force extra play when Fisher would rise to the occasion again with seven of his team’s 15 OT points. Fischer had a career high with 34 points, hitting 11-of-18 field goals against just one turnover on the afternoon. The win capped a 2-0 week for Villanova, both victories on the road in less than impressive fashion over Seton Hall and DePaul by a combined five points. Villanova is just 1-7 against the spread in their last eight games and 4-4 overall. Corey Stokes remains a question mark for Villanova as he battles through a turf toe injury. The senior has missed the last three games and is questionable for this evenings game.
Syracuse is 22-6 on the year and 10-16 against the spread. They are equally unimpressive to Villanova as they struggled to beat Rutgers at home 84-80 as 12-point home favorites. Syracuse scored 34 of its points from the foul line where the Orange held a 47-14 advantage in attempts over Rutgers. Rick Jackson had seven of Syracuse’s 11 blocks, adding 18 points and 12 rebounds. C.J. Fair made a big contribution as well, coming off the bench to play 37 minutes with 17 points and eight boards. The Orange has failed to cover the spread in three of their last four games and seven of it last ten games.
Villanova traveled to Syracuse on January 22nd as 6-point underdogs and beat Syracuse 83-72. Syracuse only lead in the game was when they 2-0. Villanova shot 50% from the field in the game in which they dominated throughout.
I see Villanova being able to pull out a tight win this evening. Assuming Fischer will play like he did towards the end of the DePaul game, the Wildcats are very difficult team to beat on their home campus. I will lay the 3 points and cheer on the Villanova Wildcats in a game that features two dangerous teams for Mach Madness.
