Pittsburgh Panthers vs. St. Johns Red Storm

Pittsburgh is 3-point road favorites over the St. Johns Red Storm in this afternoons Big East game.  The over/under total for the game is 135.

The St. Johns Red Storm are 16-9 overall and 11-13 against the spread this year.  They are looking to make their first appearance in March Madness since the 2002-2003.  St. Johns is also 8-5 in the Big East.  Steve Lavin who is in his first year with the Red Storm coaches St. Johns.  Lavin inherited a team that was short on victories, but deep in experience. There are six seniors in the top-7 of the rotation, with the other a freshman.  Lavin is having a successful first year, that was evident when they beat #1 Duke 93-78 as 8-point home underdogs on January 30th.  The Red Storm has used that game as a springboard and are 5-1 overall and 4-2 against the spread in their last six since the Duke game. Guard Dwight Hardy has been on fire the last six games averaging over 25 points per game.

The #4 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers are 24-2 overall and 11-10 against the spread.  They have a great shot to make their first Final Four since 1941. The only losses this year came at home against Notre Dame on January 24, 56-51 as ten-point favorites. There was also an early December defeat to Tennessee 83-76 as eight-point favorites.  Pittsburgh is in fist place in the Big East with a 12-1 conference record.  They have gone 8-5 against the spread in conference play.  Pittsburgh is allowing 61.3 points per game this year, which is 2nd in the Big East and 26th in the country.  Offensively, the Panthers average 76.2 points per game; which ranks them 35th in the country.  The der has gone 7-3 in Pittsburgh last 10 games after the er won in nine of the first eleven games of Pittsburgh this year.

Pittsburgh has won the last five games with St. Johns and has also covered in the last five.  Last year at St. Johns they beat them 71-64 as 2-point road favorites.  I suspect that this year will be different as St. Johns is a team playing with a new attitude.  I will take the 3-points in the game, with the thought that St. Johns will pull off this upset.  A win verse Pittsburgh will really help St. Johns chances of playing in the March Madness tournament.
