Ohio St. Buckeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers

The Purdue Boilermakers are 1-point home favorites over the Ohio St Buckeyes.  The over/under for this Big 10 battle is 137.

Purdue is 21-5 overall and 15-7 against the spread this year.  Purdue was beaten pretty badly by Ohio St. earlier this year by 23, 87-64 as 7-point road underdogs. Having the crowd behind them is certainly key for the Boilermakers, but they are also going to have to play much better defense than they did against Ohio St. in their first meeting and someone beside JaJuan Johnson need to contribute on offense. Johnson scored 22 of Purdue’s 64 points in that game while the rest of the team shot under 33 percent from the field.  Purdue trails Ohio State by two games in the Big Ten standings, and a loss here would all but give the regular season title to the Buckeyes who would have a three-game lead with four to play.  Defending their home floor becomes even more critical for the Boilermakers who will be on the road for three of their final four while Ohio State is home for three of its games before the Big Ten Tournament.

Ohio St. is 25-1 on the season and 11-12 against the spread this year.  Ohio St. not only beat Purdue this year but also beat them last year in Purdue last January 70-66 as nine-point underdogs.  That was an impressive win as Purdue is an extremely good home team.  Purdue has won all 14 of their games this year at home.  Ohio States only loss this year was to Wisconsin last week.  The Buckeyes bounced back from their loss by beating Michigan St. this Tuesday 71-61.  The Spartans challenged the Buckeyes for the first 28 minutes of the game before pulling away for the 10-point win that missed covering the 12-point spread.  Jon Diebler’s marksmanship from the free-throw line was a key component in the win as were the game-high 23 points scored by William Buford.

I am taking Purdue minus the 1-point today. The home court advantage will put the Boilermakers over the top.  Both teams are closely matched, and I feel the game will come down to the final few minutes.  It should be a very good game with Purdue pulling away late.
