New York Rangers vs. Atlanta Thrashers

The Atlanta Thrashers are -115 in this important game verse the New York Rangers.  The over/under for goals is 5.5; just three points in the standings currently separate these two teams.

New York would be the seventh seed if the playoffs started today, while the Atlanta Thrashers would not be in the playoffs.  That makes this game so important as both teams look to push for a playoff berth.  The Rangers have lost 5 games in a row while the Thrashers have lost four. New York continued its downward slide with Mondays setback to Detroit as a -155 road underdog, 3-2.  The combined five goals failed to eclipse the 5.5-goal closing total, helping the der cash the second consecutive contest. The Rangers fired an incredible 47 shots on goal, but only scored on a couple of third-period shots.  Derek Steppan tied the game at one early in the period, while Brandon Dubinsky scored with just over four minutes remaining.

Atlanta concluded a brief two-game road trip with Mondays loss to the Maple Leafs as a +105 underdog, 5-4.  The combined nine goals soared past the er. The Thrashers jumped out to a two-goal advantage in the opening period, but they were unable to overcome three second-period goals by Toronto.  Atlanta fired more shots on goal, 34-32, but the team was on the short end of faceoffs won, 34-28. It was third straight game of the Thrashers that went er

The road team has won five of the previous six meetings in the New York-Atlanta series, including both encounters this season.  The Thrashers prevailed Oct. 27 as a +120 road underdog, 6-4, while the Rangers won in a Jan. 22 shootout as a +105 road underdog, 3-2.  New York is now just 2-6 the last eight meetings with Atlanta.  I expect Atlanta to hit the ice hard tonight and beat the Rangers.  The Thrashers seem to have the Rangers number and the home-ice advantage should definitely help in this important battle for playoff positioning.
