Green Bay Packers vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons host the Green Bay Packers on Saturday in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs.  The current point spread has the Atlanta Falcons listed as a 2 point home favorite with the over/under total set at 45.5 points.

The Green Bay Packers are riding high off three consecutive wins over the New York Giants, Chicago Bears and by winning their wild card game against Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Earlier this season these two teams met at the Georgia Dome and the Atlanta Falcons prevailed 20-17, with the Packers never leading in the game.  The over/under for that game was 47.5, going under by more than 10 points.  Although many people expect lots of points in this match-up, I do not.  I cant help but think with Atlanta having two weeks to prepare for the Packers that they will be able to slow down the Packers offense and also their high quality quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The home crowd noise will help with that as well.  The Atlanta Falcons finished their regular season with a 7-1 home record.  Since Head Coach Mike Smith has taken over for the Falcons they have won 20 of 24 home games.

The key stat to any NFL game is turnovers.  The Atlanta Falcons have protected the ball very well only committing seven turnovers in their last nine games.  Although, I expect a close game, I think the home crowd and the balance attack of Quarterback Matt Ryan and Running Back Michael Turner will put the Falcons over the top in this game.

The under is the strong play in this game.  As I mentioned earlier, the two weeks the Falcons have to prepare and the fact that the Green Bay Packers were ranked fifth in total defense this season will keep the point total to a minimum.  I expect a final score of 23-16 and the Atlanta Flacons moving on to the NFC Championship game.
