Australian Open Day 7 Preview and Picks

We are now officially hot going 2-0, with one match ending in a push since Marcos Baghdatis was forced to retire in his match against Jurgen Meltzer.  I expected Marin Cilic beat John Isner in five exciting sets and Rafael Nadal beat Bernard Tomic in straight sets.  For the tournament we are now 13-5 overall.  Hopefully, you have been following my selections at making money at

Andy Roddick -110 vs. Stanislav Wawrinka -220

Andy Roddick is the only American standing in Melbourne for singles in both the mens and womens side.  Andy Roddick has made the semifinals four times in his career at the Australian Open.  Tonight he plays Stanslav Wawrinka who holds a 2-1 record in the head-to-head match-up.  The winner of this match will more than likely face Roger Federer in the semifinals.  Wawrinka got the to the quarterfinals in his last major at the US Open.  Wawrinka has been playing excellent tennis the past six months.  He won his only tournament that he has played this year in Chennai.  I expect Wawrinka to come through in 4 sets.

Pick-Wawrinka in 4 sets

Tomas Berdych -170 vs. Fernando Verdasco +140

Both are playing very well and this should be an excellent match.  Berdych trails the overall head-to-head series 6-4 to Verdasco.  Berdych has been in great form his last two matches beating two tough opponents in Phillipp Kohlschreiber and Richard Gasquet.  Verdasco had to dig deep; coming back from 2 sets to nothing against Janko Tipsarevic.  Both players are very inconsistent; therefore this is a tough match to call.  I feel that Verdasco is the more inconsistent player of the two and will go with Berdych to win five sets.

Pick-Berdych in 5 sets

Roger Federer -5000 vs. Tommy Robredo +1500

Tommy Robredo is one of four Spaniards still left on the mens side.  This will be short-lived when he plays the Swiss-Legend Roger Federer.  Tommy Robredo has been a surprise to get this far in the tournament as he has come in unseeded.  Robredos best Australian Open was in 2007 when he made the quarterfinals.  Federer had an early round scare when he went the distance with Gilles Simon of France.  Federer will be completely focused and look to get off the cover as quick as possible.  I expect Federer to win quickly and win in three sets

Pick-Federer in 3 sets
